5 Tips For Remodeling Your Bath

Updating a bath is one of the best ways to boost your home’s resale value, and make it more practical and livable for you.

Whether big or small, bathrooms should always be beautiful, well thought out and function with multiple users in mind.  Here are some tips for re-designing your bathroom for the long haul … or for the new home buyer just about to tour your home.

1)  Make sure your bathroom has a window!
No one likes a dark, damp bathroom with bad circulation. If you’re building or relocating a bathroom, try to site it on an outside wall with windows. If windows are not an option, install a skylight that can allow for fresh air and natural light.

2)  Imagine  sitting in the living room with a glass of wine and looking straight into the bathroom!
Always avoid locating the bathroom directly off the kitchen, living room or dining room. Just create some formal separation to break up the line of sight.

3)  Then there’s the toilet …
Try to avoid making it the first thing you see in the bathroom. If you can, have  the toilet and shower in their own room while keeping the sink separate. This allows someone to take a shower while someone else gets ready at the sink.

4)  Consider a curbless shower.  The subtle touch.
Most showers have  a 6-inch step at the entrance. If you’re looking to create a streamlined bathroom, that curb will stand out.  A curbless shower makes a bathroom feel bigger and is  very practical for aging-in-place homeowners. This look is fairly easy to achieve in a new bathroom or a remodel — just make sure you mention it to your architect or contractor.

5)  Remember  the importance of storage.
Bathrooms have become a major storage area with pantries for storing towels and other bath products. Bathrooms have become similar to kitchens with full height doors to drawers over doors. Men on one side and women on the other and being able to address the needs of both.
